Abstract
Naturalism was first proposed and formulated by French novelist Emile Zola. Jack London is regarded as one of the greatest naturalist novelists. He shows his philosophy of pletely in The Call of the Wild. This thesis reveals the author's naturalistic writing style from both ic determinism and environmental determinism, elaborates the double impact of ic and environmental factors on the survival of the animals, and expresses my understanding about the status of human social development. Darwin's theory of "the big fish eat up the small, the fittest survive" is fully expressed through Buck's image. This thesis intends to deal with the application of naturalism in The Call of the Wild, and thereby seek a broader understanding of naturalist literature in general.
Key Words:Naturalism;environment; heredity
