The University of Hong Kong, founded in 1911, is the oldest tertiary(第三的) institution in Hong Kong. It was granted a shield(盾牌,即港大校徽) and a motto(格言) by the College of Arms in 1913, and throughout its history the University's visual identity has been firmly based on their display, often coupled the University's name.
The Shield: depicting(表现) a golden lion on a crimson background above an open book bearing the University's motto in Chinese and panied by the Latin motto 'Sapientia et Virtus'
No other university in Hong Kong possesses a coat of arms(盾牌). This is a distinction(差别) that resonates(产生) outside Hong Kong, particularly in the United Kingdom, monwealth jurisdictions(司法权,裁判权), and the United States. It is also a reminder of the University's antiquity, and a most dignified and effective corporate identity .
Main Building
The Main Building is the oldest structure in the University of Hong Kong. It was a gift from Sir Hormusjee Navrojee Mody and was designed by Alfred Bryer of Messrs Leigh & Orange. Construction began in 1910 and pleted in 1912.
University Hall
University Hall is located in No. 144, Pokfulam Road, west of the Main Campus. The present University Hall, originally Douglas Castle, named after the Scottish business man Douglas Lapraik who built it around 1860, remains one of the University's landmark buildings.
