I. Why study the SARS case?
We can learn from our first hand experience and collective memory;
The crisis can teach us life and death lessons on how a responsible government should and should not behave;
It shows the importance of timely provision of information to society and demonstrates how the press can play its part in helping out a society in crisis.
II. The Media and SARS in Hong Kong
(1) The Origin: Everything under Control 
16 November 2002: The first SARS patient was identified, who was a chef specializing in exotic meats in Foshan city.
31 January 2003: A SARS patient from Zhong shan was admitted to a Guangzhou hospital, where he infected 30 people.
10 February 2003: Central government officials, after being informed by Guangdong officials on the outbreak of SARS, held a press conference stressing everything is under control.
11 February 2003: The Chine Ministry of Health informed WHO on the outbreak of acute respiratory syndrome listing 305 cases, out of which 105 were healthcare workers and five died.
(2) The Prelude: ing of the SARS crisis in HK
The super-spreader arrived: Dr Liu Jianglun, who has treated SARS patients in Guangzhou, checked in at Metropole Hotel on 21 February. He spread the virus to other guests in the hotel. Dr Liu later admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital and died on 4 March.
The first SARS case was reported in Vietnam (26 February).
The first SARS case was reported in Singapore (1 March).
The first casualty of SARS in Toronto was reported (5 March).
First SARS case reported in Beijing (5 March).
China asked for help from WHO (10 March).
