of Workers Around the World
Social Accountability International (SAI) is a non-anization
dedicated to improving workplaces munities by developing and
implementing social responsibility standards. SAI’s first such standard,
is the SA8000 workplace human rights system.
SAI focuses on the following activities:
• Convenes key stakeholders to develop consensus-based voluntary standards
• Conducts cost-benefit research that assists business in its ethical sourcing decisions
• Operates an accreditation agency that oversees qualified certification bodies
• Provides training and technical assistance
• Assists corporations in efforts to improve the social performance of their operations and those of their
supply chains
SAI partners with multiple stakeholders -- companies, non-anizations (NGOs), and trade
unions – to carry out research, training and capacity building programs. Since its formation in 1997, SAI
has worked cooperatively on development programs in numerous countries, including China, Vietnam,
Italy, Spain, Turkey and Guatemala, and trained many thousands of people in over thirty countries.
