名词是用来表示人、事物、地点以及抽象事物的名称的(A noun is the name of a person or thing)。比如:
人:john, sister, father
事物:water, air, sun, computer
地点:London, theater
抽象名词:love, happiness, imagination, hope
★名词的分类
一般来讲, 名次分为专有名词(proper noun)mon noun)两大类。进一步分类, 请看下表:
专有名词:Beijing Smith the United Nations
个体名词:man, expert, factory
名词可数名词
集合名词:audience(观众),class, family
普通名词:
物质名词:water, coal, rice
不可数名词
抽象名词:surprise, honour, help
一、专有名词
专有名词主要包括:
如:Winston Churchill, the Queen of England, the President of the United States, Doctor Mathews, Professor Samuels等。
如:War and Peace(《战争与和平》)The Merchant of Venice(《威尼斯商人》)
Pride and Prejudice(《傲慢与偏见》)
一年中12个月的名称:January,February,March,April,May,June,July,August, September,October,November,December。

一周七天:Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday,Friday,Saturday,Sunday
一年四季:winter,spring,summer,autumn :Christmas,Easter,Mother’s Day等
1)国家及大洲的名称 America,Africa,Asia,China,Peru等
2)地区、城市的名称 Rome,Vancouver,Beijing,California,Chengdu等
3)江河湖海的名称 the Atlantic,the Dead Sea,the Rhine,the Nile等
4)山脉、沙漠的名称 the Himalayas,the Alps,the Sahara等
二、普通名词
从上面的表格我们可以看出,对于普通名词还可细分为可数名词和不可数名词。对于名词,最重要的莫过于可数名词和不可数名词的分类了。这一分类是英语名词学****的核心,因为它关系到很多问题,如可数名词变复数的问题,限定词修饰名词的问题,还有就是一个名词作可数与不可数时意义的不同。
三、简单名词和复合名词
此外,根据名词的构成,我们可将名词分为简单名词和复合名词。简单名词就是组成部分不可被分割的名词,比如story,student和teacher等等。英语中绝大多数都是简单名词。复合名词就是由若干单词组合而成的名词,比如girlfriend,roommate,policewoman和mother-in-low(岳母、婆婆)等。
★名词的用法
:The radio says that it may stop raining later. 广播说一会儿雨可能会停。
: Class 3 were the winners. 三班获胜了。
: I told him a story. 我给他讲了个故事。
: He named her Jenny. 他给她取名詹妮。
:We are discussing the population problem. 我们正在讨论人口问题。
名词作定语一般用单数,但也有以下例外。
1) 用复数作定语。如:sports meeting 运动会 students reading-room 学生阅览室 talks table 谈判桌
the foreign languages department 外语系
2) man, woman, gentleman等作定语时,其单复数以所修饰的名词的单复数而定。如:men workers, women teachers。
3) 有些原有s结尾的名词,作定语时,s保留。如:goods train (货车) arms produce武器生产
