EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The technology of power electronics has gone through rapid technological advancement during the last four decades, and recently, its applications are fast expanding in industrial, commercial, residential, military, and utility environments. In the highly automated industrial environment struggling for high quality products with low cost, it appears that two technologies will be most dominating: computers and power electronics with motion control [1]. The conventional (mechanical type) meters made use of the ic field effect produced by voltage/current coils. By means of this effect, a disc was made to rotate proportionally to the amount of electricity consumed; the number of rotations was converted mechanically into a display value by gear wheels and the value was displayed by means of a resistor.
There are several technical challenges that must be e in order plete this design. First, the system will be powered by the same source that provides power to the meter. As a result, AC/DC conversions and voltage divider techniques must be used to meet the specifications of the circuitry. Other technical challenges include proper positioning of the emitter/detector and packaging constraints. Finally, the system must be able to provide efficient munication and be cost effecti
