History of Economic Thought on Population Growth: Beyond Mercantilist to Modern Thoughts.
1] Introduction: It is only recently that population growth has risen so rapidly unlike previously in history. Different time periods or era have experienced growth of population quite differently. One could start to trace back in history and go to the Mercantilist era. During the mercantilist period there was extensive military conflict or war between many nations than one can see at any time in history. This period was also considered a period of rapid growth. It was here that one can observe various ideas emerging which were proposed to culminate into policies. One such issue is about population growth. Thoughts on population evolved beyond the mercantilist period. Ideas of population shaped strongly after this period. One can trace ideas evolving and emerging from liberal school to physiocratic school and pre-classical era. Further, along came the classical ideas but there was one pre dominant thinker who spoke of population who was Thomas Malthus. His ideas and thoughts have been followed by other thinkers not only of his time but has been modified ing generations. Many changes in ideas are seen through out history as the world evolved.
This paper will make an attempt to survey the thoughts and ideas on population growth in history of economics. The paper will consist of three sections. Section one will be the introduction. Section two will survey the literature on the ideas about population growth in different eras and by prominent thinkers. Section three will be the conclusion.
