ethics and the brain
Engineering challenges focus on the most pressing and vital areas in society to discover solutions to prominent issues. In 2008, the National Academy of Engineers named 14 “Grand Challenges for Engineering” that spanned the “four broad realms of human concern”: sustainability, health, vulnerability and joy of living [1]. I find the Challenge ‘Reverse-Engineer the Brain’ to be one of the most essential. Being able to manipulate and recreate the abilities of the brain will reinvent health care as we know it. Of significant importance, in my opinion, is the development and implementation of neural prostheses, and more specifically microchips. Neural prostheses could help return normalcy to the lives of millions of neurologically challenged people.
panying any engineering project or research are concerns about the ethics surrounding the actions of the engineers panies. Microchip research is no exception. The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) has developed an ethical guideline for practicing engineers to follow. In addition to the NSPE, the Biomedical Engineering Society has also developed a Code of Ethics specifically for Biomedical Engineering. Research involving microchips passes multiple ethical guidelines from both of these codes. Most prominent though are canons involv
