A b s tr a c t
C lassical C h in ese poetry, as the jew el of the C hinese culture and civilization , h as
a long history of m ore th an three thousand years. A m on g all th e typ es of literary
tran slation, poetry is actu ally w ell-k now n due to its difficu lty in translation . In fact,
foreign read ers are not ab le to have an understanding of all the E nglish version s of
classical C h inese po etry, or even th ey m ay feel puzzled.
M any E n glish v ersio ns of classical C hin ese p oetry usu ally cann ot carry the
equivalent effect and b eauty of th e source texts because o f th e translators' lack o f skill,
the differen ces b etw een th e C hin ese langu age and the E nglish langu age an d the
in h e ren t d iffe re n c e s o f c u ltu re s a n d c iv iliz a tio n s b e tw e en th e tw o c o u n trie s .
T h e m o st significant in the translation o f classical C hin ese p oetry is conv eyan ce
of artistic conception . T h e ach ievem ents of translation of C h inese poetry are b ased on
conv eying artistic con ception of C h inese poetry as w ell as gu ide the readers tow ards a
living sp ace associated w ith im agin ation .
T his th esis firstly introduces p oetry tran slation briefly. T h e second ch ap ter
review s the results of previous researches. T he third ch apter analyzes translation
aesth etics, its develop m ent in C hin a and its relationship w ith po etry tran slation . T h e
fourth chapter takes the version of translation aesth etics to analyze the translation o f
artistic conception in classical C hinese poetry. T he fifth ch apter discu sses aesth etic
