Abstract
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) is a distinguished short story writer in England at
the beginning of the 20th century. For a long time, her modernist techniques and the
delicate style and poetic language of her stories are the major concerns of her critics. In
recent years, there are also ments which are related to the theme of her stories,
but most of them focused on the tragic subject and feminist themes. From an ecofeminist
perspective, this thesis takes Mansfield‟s short stories as the analytical text,
supplemented by the author‟s letters and diary to explore the human-nature and
man-woman relationships showed in Mansfield‟s stories and to reveal the implied
ecological awareness and feminist awareness.
According to ecofeminist interpretation, the study has been done from three aspects,
criticism of the patriarchal society, subversion of the traditional role of women and nature
and yearning for a harmonious society.
The criticism of the patriarchal society is studied in Chapter two. This chapter
analyzed Mansfield‟s concern of the subordinated women, disillusioned children,
invisible lower class and the degradative nature, revealed that the author has been aware
that the patriarchal society is the root of the domination on the weak, and expressed the
author‟s criticism of the patriarchal soc
