APPLIED CLIMATOLOGY
Climatology has ‘come of age’ in the last decade or so and the resultant ‘climate consciousness’ highlights the
vulnerability of society to climatic inconstancy. It is now obvious that human activities can inadvertently modify the global
climatic environment through bustion of fossil fuels, trace gas pollution and deforestation. At the same time, humans
can also deliberately modify the meso-climate through a variety of schemes such as cloud seeding, frost protection, fog
dispersal and hurricane moderation.
This book emphasizes the effect of climate on the physical, biological and cultural environments and includes both present-
day and future relationships. The book is divided into four main parts. Part 1 examines the current practices/methodological
developments which represent the basic ‘tools’ which underpin applied climatological research (including data collection
and statistical representation, modelling procedures and ways of managing atmospheric resources). Part 2 explores the
influence of present-day and predicted climates on the functioning of the physical/ biological environments including
hydrological processes/water resources, glaciers, landforms/ geomorphic processes, soils, vegetation and animals. Part 3
concentrates on the relationship between climate and a wide range of human responses/activities, fort
