Efficiency of passive controlled U-type anti-rolling tanks

Abstract: The motion equation of ship-tank systems is developed at first. Based on the equation, the formula to estimate ideal efficiency which expresses the capability of a designed passive controlled U-type anti-rolling tank is deduced. By defining specific transversal area and specific length of water column for tanks, the effect of the height of a tank equipped in a ship, the effect of the water damping, the effect of water storage etc. are discussed. The paper draws conclusions that it is effective to up rate the efficiency of an anti-rolling tank by reducing the water damping in the tank, by increasing the height of the tank or the water storage.

减摇水舱是减小船舶横摇的有效装置之一,已有120多年的应用与发展历史,,,对于不加控制的被动减摇水舱,由于其有效区域很窄,在非谐摇区可能会出现增摇情况,所以对其减摇效果的评价尚存争议.
