FOREWORD:
My Counterintelligence Days
DURING WORLD WAR II, I served in
England and France with the Counterintelligence Branch of
the United States Ninth Air Force headquarters. The most
exciting part of our work was with the French underground,
or resistance, though it was only after the war was over that
we could fully realize the true immensity of the resist-ants'
power and influence.
We were always aware, of course, of the French
underground and its willingness to risk everything to win the
war. But while those crucial years of
