Advantages of Research in Creating Corporate Strategy
Corporate strategy has been an interesting topic since the very early days of the strategic planning field. According to Andrews (1971), corporate strategy as ‘the pattern of decisions that determined pany’s goals, produced the principle policies for achieving these goals, and defined the range of businesses pany was to pursue’. Porter (1987) said that corporate strategy as ‘what makes the corporate whole add up to more than its business parts’. Although some anomaly on how big the corporate impact on the performance of multi firms (Schmalensee, 1985; Rumelt, 1991; Brush and Bromiley, 1997; Chang and Singh, 2000; Hawawini et al., 2003), the impact of corporate-level decisions on the overall strategy of a multibusiness firm has been widely reported in the strategy literature (Porter, 1987; Goold et al., 1995; Collis and Montgomery, 1998; Bowman and Helfat, 2001; Ruefli and Wiggins, 2003).
One major focus of corporate strategy scholars has been identifying broad patterns followed by multi firms in their opportunity to improve ‘corporate advantage’. Here Porter (1987) identified and examined generic corporate strategies followed by multi firms.
