What is Australian multiculturalism? What are the three levels at which Australian multiculturalism could be understood?
The indigenous people believe that their connection to their tribal land is important to the continuation of their culture. But much of their lands are now occupied by non-indegenous people, by panies or pastoralists. Do you think the Australian government should return the lands to the indigenous people? Why?
Multiculturalism
A world view that rejects the global centrality of any single culture or historical perspective.
A principle, an approach, or a set of rules of conduct that guides the interactions and influences the perceptions, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors of people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
A term mainly used to describe society which have many distinct cultural groups, usually results from colonization and/or immigration.
Why Multiculturalism?
Because of views or policies that encourages individuals to assert cultural differences to the limit of not threatening national unity or the security of the society.
Cultural particularism: each group promote its own interests and especially independent of other groups.
Cultural pluralism: culture of each group together with other groups’ cultures create a harmonious culture. The notion that groups should be allowed and even encouraged to hold on to what gives them their unique identities while maintaining their membership in the larger social framework.
It does not advocate separatism but promote diversity - not a melting pot but a salad bowl concept-unity with uniqueness!
