I gratefully acknowledge all people who have assisted me in the process of
completing my thesis. Without their help, pletion would have been impossible.
First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the support of
my supervisor, Professor Zhu Xiaomei. I am especially indebted to Professor Zhu for
encouraging me to undertake the research. Her enthusiasm, direction and guidance have
been a great inspiration and support to me. I owe a great deal to her for being
exceptionally generous with her time, her academic expertise as well as her insightful
comments.
Likewise, I am grateful to all the professors in the School of Foreign Studies of
Anhui University for their excellent lectures and inspiring ideas, which have benefited
me a lot. Among them are Professor Zhu Yue, Professor Chen Zhengfa, Professor Zhang

I also owe a debt to those who helped me find participants for the study. I would
like to acknowledge the kind hospitality and the practical support of English class
teachers who assisted me in supervising the implementation of the questionnaire and
took part in the discussion of the interviewees’ response in the study, especially Miss
