Abstract: We develop a novel QoS-aware energy-efficient upstream traffic scheduling algorithm for
channel-bonding cable modems (CMs) in hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) networks. Based on their QoS
requirements, the algorithm sends ing packets to different priority queues and controls
channel-bonding transmitters (TXs) to forward them. Based on a vacation M/M/n queuing model, we
analyze the algorithm’s performance with a threedimensional Markov chain and derive the analytical
expressions of packet delay and power consumption.

0 Introduction
Channel bonding is a major technology improvement in Data over Cable Service Interface
Specifications (DOCSIS) , the newest version of international industry standard for developing
Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) networks [1]. Specifically, by binding multiple upstream and downstream
channels simultaneously, DOCSIS can push the bi-directional throughput of a Cable Modem (CM)
up to 100 Mbps or more. While the works are usu
