林语堂美译思想探究——以《浮生六记》为个案研究

本文结合中国传统译学观点,以林语堂“美”的翻译标准在其英译《浮生六记》中
的体现为例,从翻译美学的角度探讨翻译中国古典文学的有效途径。
本文从中国翻译美学的研究入手,结合林语堂的《论翻译》一文,分析了林语堂倡
导的美在《浮生六记》中的呈现。作为一名翻译家,林语堂不仅对外翻译了大量的中》、《庄子》、《老残游记》等,而且还写了很多有关翻译的
文章,如《对译名划一的一个紧要提议》、《论翻译》、《论译诗》等等。其中,林语堂最
系统最全面论述翻译理论的文章是他在 1933 年所写的近万字的《论翻译》。在这篇文章
中,他创造性地提出“翻译是一种艺术”,并提出了“忠实、通顺和美”的翻译标准。
林语堂是中国历史上第一个从翻译的角度论“美”的翻译家。他的翻译美学思想,在中
国翻译研究领域有着重大的影响。本文的重点是对林语堂在《浮生六记》中美的思想的
体现的研究,并得出以下结论:林的译文分别从形式,内容和文化上充分再现了原文的
美,完美地印证了他以美为最高境界的翻译思想。
作为一位学贯中西的翻译家,林语堂对翻译做出的贡献不可估量,尤其是在翻译
美学方面。他的翻译美学为中国的翻译理论和实践提供了指导,值得更深的挖掘和思考。

Abstract
This thesis unifies the Chinese traditional translation theories to make a thorough study
of Lin’s translation from the aesthetic perspective, with a tentative exploration into his
“beauty” standard in his Six Chapters of a Floating Life, and to discuss the valid approaches
to translate Chinese classics.
This thesis begins with the study of Chinese translation aesthetics and analyses Lin’s
aesthetic thoughts reflected in his translation of Six Chapters of a Floating Life, with his On
Translation as the theoretical basis. As a translator, Lin Yutang not only translated a large
number of Chinese classical literary works, such as Six Chapters of a Floating Life,
Chuangtse, A Nun of Taishan and Other Translation, etc, but also wrote many articles
concerning translation, such as An Urgent Proposal to the Uniformity of Translated Forms,
On Translation, On Poetry, etc. Among these articles, the most systematic prehensive
one about translation theory was his On Translation written in 1933, with the total words of
almost ten thousand. In this article, he creatively put forward that “translation is a fine art”
and stated his three translation criteria, namely “faithfulness, fluency and beauty”. Lin Yutang
