Abstract: Carbon coated AlN hollow nanospheres (AlN/C) were synthesized by a subsequent chemical
vapor deposition of CH4 following the nitridation of Al nanoparticles. The structure position of
the products were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman
spectroscopy. The uncoated AlN hollow nanospheres underwent an easy hydrolysis reaction and their
hollow structure was collapsed and changed to villiform morphology, panying by the
transformation of AlN to AlOOH. AlN/C with carbon shell of 1~4 nm in thickness had high stability
toward hydrolysis even in the ultrasonic and heating treatment. These results indicate that carbon
coating is an efficient and convenient route for the protection of AlN nanostructures against hydrolysis.
