Traditionally, refineries recover diesel as a direct product from the atmospheric
crude tower. With continuing changes in diesel quality and increased diesel demand, keeping
with that tradition leaves recoverable diesel behind. The fewer the processing steps, the
better the diesel and the easier the diesel treatment. Keeping diesel out of the FCC
maximizes diesel value. Diesel slipping into the vacuum unit restricts downstream capacity.
For revamps, adding alternate diesel production locations creates strategies to
maximize unit performance and minimize investment. Even for new units, examining all of
the options and using a less conventional approach often increases yields and reduces
pared to slavish application of conventional practice.
Overview
Market drivers continue to increase diesel demand and potential diesel profits. Many
plants have a large volume of un-recovered virgin diesel. Recovering the diesel as soon as
possible increases the diesel’s value and debottlenecks downstream units.
