Abstract
Thomas Hardy is unique as a novelist in the history of English literature. He focuses on the poor's fate which reveals the evil of society, but Hardy is a controversial writer. Some people think that in Hardy's Jude the Obscure there is fatalism which made it difficult to understand; others think that Hardy's works are involved in the fatalism's mistake and a pessimistic attitude towards life. It is considered that Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure is the most outstanding and controversial novel in his works. There are countless coincidence occurred in the hero, which pushes the hero to an unpredictable situation. Meanwhile, characters' personalities and the external environment always conflict with the fate. In that situation, it is destined that people were unable to fight. Thus the fatalism which people can not fight against was formed.
This paper focuses on the formation of Hardy's fatalism and its embodiment as well as its significance. According to Hardy's writing techniques coincidence and omens further analyze fatalism. A conclusion can be drawn that Hardy's fatalism is not a sheer fatalism; it is also used as a means of animadverting the false and bias of social system.
