Abstract
The simulation and control of a horizontal axis variable speed wind turbine is examined. Appro-
priate mathematical models for the wind turbine induction generator and voltage sourced converter
are developed. The developed models are implemented using Simulink S-Functions with some of
the simulation difficulties examined. A simple controller is developed to extract maximum power
from the wind, by varying the load torque supplied by the generator. The controller is implemented
using some of the developed models and the viability of such a control scheme is verified.

1 Introduction
The manner in which a wind turbine operates is to change wind energy to rotational energy with
the use of an aerofoil. This rotational energy is then converted using an electrical machine into
electrical energy, which is usually supplied to the grid at distribution level. The scheme being
examined in this paper is the use of a variable speed turbine connected to an induction generator.
The reason for the wide spread use of induction generators is that they are rugged, brushless, n
