摘要

林语堂的英文名著《苏东坡传》(The Gay Genius:The Life and
Times of Su Tungpo),自 1947 年出版以来备受关注,既赢得了无数
读者的青睐,同时也引起过较多的争议。该书集中展示了林语堂社会
文化思想的各个方面,可谓考察林氏思想的一扇窗口。以往的研究者
侧重于以林语堂的人文主义思想为出发点,考察林语堂关注于“个人”
的个体性眼光,而对于他关注社会、“国民”等方面的群体性眼光的
重视程度不够。以群体性眼光考察林语堂思想,则有较多的新发现。
基于对生命悲剧性本质的认识,林语堂提倡幽默的根本出发点,
是试图以幽默的温暖来抚慰人世伤痛。作为人生观之一种的幽默,其
主旨是爱与同情,其定位是积极应对人生的方法。这些在《苏东坡传》
中有深切的反映。《苏东坡传》还显示出林语堂作为“永久的反对党”
对社会各种弊端巨大的批判力量:他长期致力于社会批评与文化建
设,批判社会和人的异化,竭力维护正常人性;旗帜鲜明地反对极端
思想和行为,以守护个性为作家的最重要职责并恪尽职守。林语堂的
民本思想在《苏东坡传》中也有颇为充分的体现。通过对于苏东坡“百
姓之友”形象的成功塑造,林语堂强调了现代社会中法治的重要性以
及法治代替人治的紧迫性。他剖析了现实社会在当时推行民主的内在
障碍在于奴性在国民身上的普遍存在及公共精神的极度匮乏,相应

地,他呼吁国人保持一颗“少年心”与内在的热情,并以此作为实现
民主的精神根基。《苏东坡传》中体现出的林语堂社会文化思想,在
今天看来仍然具有可贵的价值,其当下意义值得进一步探究。

Abstract

Lin Yutang's English classic, Su Biography (The Gay Genius: The
Life and Times of Su Tungpo), since its first release on 1947 has won
great favor of numerous readers. However, it also aroused a lot of
controversy in the meantime. Lin Yutang, displayed his various aspects of
social and cultural thinking through Su Biography which can be described
as a window to prehensive thought. The precedent researchers in
the past mainly focused on examining Lin’s "personal" perspective to
individuality starting from his humanistic ideas, but less on his concern
over society and "national" groups. Some new discoveries will be found
when studying Lin’s thought from the latter.
Based on realization that life is tragic, the fundamental purpose for
Lin Yutang’s advocating humor is to sooth painful human through the
power of humor. Being one of the philosophies on life, humor is for love
and sympathy and to use a positive way to face realistic happenings. Su
Biography not just reflects a lot about that, but also reveals Lin’s
powerful criticism
