3111 Sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels are rapidly growing in popularity due
4 to their versatility. The design and construction of both hard rock and soft
5 ground tunnels has been revolutionised by the advent of the SCL method
6 and now the use of permanent sprayed concrete linings has unlocked the
7 true potential of the method to minimise construction costs and times. Yet
8 plex early-age behaviour of the sprayed concrete makes the design
9 difficult and requires a robust management system during construction.
20111 Consequently the great advantages of the method must be balanced against
1 the large risks, as illustrated by recent high-profile tunnel collapses.
2 Practising engineers on site, in the design office or in anisations
3 will find this book an excellent introduction. It covers all aspects of SCL
4 tunnelling – from the constituents of sprayed concrete to detailed design
5 and management during construction. Although there is a close inter-
6 dependence between all the facets of sprayed concrete, few engineers have
7 the right breadth of experience and expertise to cover all of them. This
8 urgently needs to be transferred to the wider munity as
9 SCL tunnels play an important role in the delivery of the underground
30111 infrastructure which modern urban life demands.

2 Alun Thomas is a senior engineer at Mott MacDonald Ltd. He has been
3 involved in many of the recent major UK tunnelling projects such as the
4 Jubilee Line Extension, Heathrow Express, Terminal 5 and Crossrail, as
35 well as working on the design and construction of tunnels internationally.
