There are gothic elements, the macabre, creaking floorboards, clanking chains, ancient prophecies etc. The ghost has to haunt yet he gets terrorised in return. Canterville ghost presents a miserable bedraggled picture instead of a scary one. When he laughs demonically, he is offered tincture, when he drags his chains, he gets lubricator, his victims gain in strength and the ghost falls sick, has cold and virtually es an invalid.
