文档介绍:呼啸山庄英文内容简介
Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights is Emily Bront? 's only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte. The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story cen tres (as an adjective, wutheri ng is a Yorkshire word referring to turbule nt weather). The n arrative tells the tale of the all-e ncompass ing and passi on ate, yet thwarted, love betwee n Heathcl iff and Catheri ne Earn shaw, and how this un resolved passi on eve ntually destroys them and many around them. Now con sidered a classic of En glish literature, Wutheri ng Heights' inno vative structure, which has been likened to a series of Matryoshka dolls,[citation needed] met with mixed reviews by critics whe n it first appeared, with many horrified by the stark depict ions of men tal and physical cruelty.[1][2] Though Charlotte Bron t? 's Jane Eyre was origi nally con sidered the best of the Bront? sisters' works, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its originality and achieveme nt made it superior.[3] Wutheri ng Heights has also give n rise to many adaptati ons and in spired works, in cludi ng films, radio, televisi on dramatisati ons, a musical by Bernard J. Taylor and songs (no tably the hit Wutheri ng Heights by Kate Bush), ballet and opera.
