ABSTRACT. A theory was developed for the mass and energy balanco of microbial processes,
with special reference to the anaerobic production of methane. Interrelation s of the bioengineering
parameters of the process were delineated substrate quality, biodegradability and biological
efficiency of anaerobic processing of complex organic waste substrates. Application of the method
is demonstrated on practical examples.
The currently climbing energy prices are reflected in a number of areas in
the effort to rationalize energy consumption and utilize secondary energy
sources. In agriculture, superfluous wastes (slurry, manure, poultry droppings,
etc.) may be processed anaerobically to yield CH4 which serves as an energy
source. The efficiency of technology of CH4 manufacture depends on many
