Social media is meant to bring us together in sharing each other’s happiness. But more and more data shows it’s doing the opposite. In fact, a survey last year shows that many of us are living in a state of constant fear.
A survey of 2,084 US adults ages 18 and older conducted by , an online communication hub, revealed that 56 percent of respondents are afraid of missing out on events, news and important status updates when they are away from social networks. This condition is referred to as Fear of Missing Out, or FOMO.
“FOMO is a form of social anxiety,” *psychiatrist Gail Saltz told Glamour magazine. “This type of fear tends to cause compulsive behaviors, like checking out other social situations even as you are in the middle of one currently. The result is often not truly being involved in any social relationship or experience because you always have one eye peering elsewhere.”
In other words, FOMO is worrying that other people are doing more interesting things than you, have more friends, and are just all around living a better life. It’s a feeling that has become more *prevalent in the age of social media. Never has it been easier to compare your own life and choices against millions of others.
