Ratios: definitions, meaning and practice problems
Do all the work on a separate sheet of paper. You will only turn in the first four questions, which will be graded as journal.
1. Write a definition of
* ratio
*rate
* proportion.
2. What is the difference between ratio and proportion?
3. Where do we use ratios in our lives?
4. How are ratios and fractions related? How are they different?
5. Which of the following can be represented as fractions?
* The ratio of males to females at Mountain State College is 3:2
* In order to get a stain out of a shirt, Lisa made a mixture of bleach in the ratio 3 parts water to 1 part bleach.
*In a rectangle, the ratio of the width to the length is 2:3
*Fred’s car gets 25 miles per gallon.
(In particular, notice that a ratio can’t always be represented as a fraction)
6. You are planning for a 2000-mile trip and want to estimate how much money you will spend on gas. How would you do that?
