Case Study: Smart SOA Approaches
for Green Solutions: Business
Process Management and Resource
Optimization
In this IBM® Redpaper publication, we describe how a pany, JKHL
Enterprises (JKHLE), adopts IBM Smart SOA solutions to help drive green
initiatives and reduce energy costs.
In this paper, we address three green SOA solutions:
Resource optimization in data centers
Modeling the environmental impact of business processes
Optimizing business process management for environmental conditions
Additional green SOA solutions are described in the IBM Redpaper publication
Case Study: Smart SOA Approaches for Green Solutions, REDP-4462.

Resource optimization in data centers
With its transformation to a Smart SOA-anization, JKHLE is closely
looking at optimizing the resources that are running within its data centers.
Energy consumption and environmental concerns are ing priorities for
JKHLE because these concerns can impede their ability to grow and respond to
organizational IT needs.
Data center concerns
In September 2007, IBM and the Economist Intelligence Unit issued a report
entitled IT and the environment: A new item on the CIO agenda?1 This report
found that although anizations say that they are anizations,
many of them are not actually doing as much as they can. Two-thirds of the two
hundred or more executives polled said that anizations have a
board-level executive responsible for energy and the environment; however, only
45% of firms had a program in place to reduce their carbon footprint. In addition,
of those that did have a carbon reduction strategy, the majority (52%) had no
specific targets for it, although a small majority (9%) aimed to be carbon-neutral
by 2012. As part of its move to Smart SOA, JKHLE wants to explore ways to
