文档介绍:The optimum conditions which we developed for the chlorornethylation of benzene involved the reaction of 3 moioles of benzene, 2 equivalents of trioxymethylene and 30 g. of zinc chloride in 200 ml. of glacial acetic acid with excess anhydrous hydrogen chloride (passed in to saturation during the first 3 hours) at 60℃ for 72 hours. The yield of benzyl chloride is 65%, based on formaldehyde. Toluene was much more reactive-a 57% yield of the product was obtained in only 18 hours with half the quantity of the zinc chloride catalyst. In ease of manipulation and quality of product the procedure proved quite advantageous over that described by Blanc JAC.
To a stirred mixture of the ether 4 ( g, ) and paraformaldehyde ( g, ) in hexane (100ml) was added dropwise conc. HCl (50ml) at room temperature. After the solid was dissolved completely, the mixture was stirred for another 30min and then stood still. The two layers were separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with hexane (2 50ml) organic layer and the extracts were combined, washed with brine, dried, and evaporated in vacuo. Silica gel chromatography of the residue provided the benzyl chloride 5 as colorless oil in 90% yield ( g).
