Shakespeare was not of an age, but for all time. Over four hundred years, the researches
and studies on Shakespeare have never ceased. However, due to the lack of definite document
recordings as well as relevant monographs on his literary theory, people can not come to a
unified conclusion on his ideology and theory, but just to analyze and speculate it from his
works. It is this uncertainty that leads to the booming and prosperity of critics on Shakespeare,
thus each school of experts holds their own views and seeks common ground while putting
aside differences. His 154 sonnets resemble a shinning star in the history of European
literature which magnetized much attention of Shakespearean critics. For the identity of the
young man portrayed in the sonnet sequence has been the focus of arguments by critics,
which remains an eternal mystery of Shakespeare’s sonnets.
Along with the advancement of literature review, Shakespearean critics have put forward
a variety of speculations on the identity of the young man in Shakespeare’s sonnets, yet it has
never come to a definite conclusion. On the basis of the previous studies, this present thesis
endeavors to get an overall summarization on the identity of the young man in the sonnet
sequence through close reading, classification and comparison semantic analysis as well as
some other methods complemented with more detailed text example for proof, in order to
achieve a general knowledge on the identity of the young man in this sonnet sequence. This
paper is made up of five parts, including an introduction, three main chapters and a
conclusion.
The introduction mainly introduces Shakespeare’s individual backgrounds and his
composing career as well as the research status quo on Shakespeare’s sonnets at home and
abroad, ending with a brief statement of the research methods and the significance of this
paper.
