Abstract—Increasing evidence suggests that very efficient both in bench experiments and field tests for
nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) is one of best materials the remediation of perchloroethene (PCE, C2Cl4),
for the treatment of heavy metal ions in water. In this work, trichloroethene (TCE, C2HCl3), carbon tetrachloride (CT,
the reduction of Cr(VI) by nZVI was investigated. CCl4), energetic munitions such as TNT and RDX, legacy
Laboratory experiments with varied Cr(VI) anohalogen pesticides such as lindane and DDT, nitrate,
and nZVI doses were performed. Chromium removal as well as some heavy metals [5]. The high remediation
efficiency decreases as the ratio [Cr(VI)]/nZVI increases efficiency is mainly attributed to nZVI’s high surface area
due to the limited reaction sites on nZVI surface and to volume ratio, high levels of surface defects, and high
passivation by the formation and precipitation of Cr(OH)3 at surface energies, which make the nanoparticles very
the surface. The rea
