ABSTRACT
Three laws include the dispositions that regulate activities related with the
exploration, development and exploitation of geothermal energy for energy
production in the Costa Rican Republic. The first of these was published in 1976 as
Law No. 5961. The second one, Law No. 7200 was published in 1990. Finally, in
1995, Law No. 7508 was published as a modification to Law No. 5961. This
document makes reference to these laws and the modifications to which they have
been submitted to adapt them to new conditions in order to improve private
participation in electricity generation. A new law, currently under study in the
Legislative Assembly, will allow geothermal energy to be exploited in national
parks, if approved.
