人口年龄结构是人口群体在某一时点上的年龄分布状况。它是过去几十年、甚至上百年人口自然增长和人口迁移变动综合作用的结果，又是今后人口再生产变动的基础和起点，它不仅对未来人口发展的类型、速度和趋势有重大影响，而且对今后的社会经济发展也将产生很大的作用。
本文以2010年第六次全国人口普查结果为基础，结合历次人口普查数据，采用结构和比较分析法，参照国际通用标准，对内江人口年龄结构现状、发展变化趋势及对经济社会发展的影响进行分析，并提出有助于经济社会发展的参考意见。考虑全市外出人口较多，因此，本文在采用常住人口分析的基础上，还尽可能采用户籍人口辅证，文中非特指的人口均指常住人口。
