achievements have been obtained with respect to its water saving effect and better
irrigation performance (Wang, 1994a; SiTu et al., 1994; Wang et al., 1996). Most reported
studies on surge irrigation in China and abroad are limited to using clean water as the
irrigation source (Izuno et al., 1985; McCornick et al., 1988; Wang, 1994a; Jalali-Farahani
et al., 1998). In the Yellow River basin of China, however, most irrigation water has a
seasonally high content of sediment. The irrigation districts along the river divert a large
amount of water with high sediment content each year for crop use. For example, in the
Jing, Luo and Wei Irrigation Districts of Shaanxi Province, it is permissible to divert
irrigation water from river intakes when the sediment content does not exceed 15%. Thus
studying the impact of sediments in irrigation water on the surge irrigation method will not
only help improve irrigation efficiency in the loess plateau area of northwestern China, but
also add new features to the surge irrigation technique, an
