The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED rating system was introduced to Canada in 2002by the Canadian Green Building Council and, although LEED provides only one of many tools to measure the environmental performance of buildings, the program has spread rapidly through the country. Many
municipalities have legislated minimum standards of LEED performance for their new publicly funded buildings, and several have mandated that major private sector developments also meet this minimum standard.
Energy policy

jurisdictions varies
considerably,
as
the
primary
source
of
energy for
buildings
ranges
from
coal
and
nuclear
power
in Ontario,
to
hydroelectricity
in
British
Columbia
and Quebec. Hence
government
strategies
to
encourage the
development
of
renewable
energy
alternatives also
vary
considerably
between jurisdictions.

development
