据传是曹操惊建关公庙，说的是关羽败走麦城，被吕蒙擒拿，孙权杀害，孙权派人把关公人头送给曹操，想让刘备痛恨曹操，攻打洛阳。曹操见了关羽人头，跟活的一样，说了句玩笑话：“云长别来无恙否？”谁知关公睁眼动须，可把曹操吓坏了，昏倒几天，醒来后，急忙以公卿的葬礼，建冢植林，厚葬关公。可是曹操仍然有心病，睁眼合眼，总见关公站在面前，每天胆颤心惊，曹操才不得不诚心给关公建庙。原计划把庙盖在洛阳，但不是倒塌就是失火，老建不成，原因是洛阳有句童谣：“关公关公、心傲气盛，光说过五关，不提困麦城”。曹操经谋士提醒忽然想到：关公温酒斩华雄，三英战吕布夺关斩将，英雄的时候都在虎牢关，就决定在虎牢关给关公建了个大庙，当时叫

“荆王庙”，后来人称"关公庙"，庙建成之后，曹操的病日渐好转。
关公庙位于汜水镇虎牢关村，现庙内存有紫檀木雕刻的关羽像，，后院殿前有一八棱碑，高1米多，，唐元和十一年（公元861年）勒石。
关公庙为何亦称三义庙
相传玉皇大帝被关云长的正气所感动，让姜子牙打开封神榜，添了一行字，封关云长为关圣帝君，仅次于玉皇大帝，管天上所有的神。
刘备死了以后，虽有皇陵祖庙，可比起关公来就差得远了，家家户户都供奉着关公的神像，连周仓、关平也跟着沾光，因为关公很重义气，对刘备、张飞受人冷落感到很难受。有一次他到玉帝那里汇报民情，趁着玉帝高兴的时候，请求给他的刘兄、张弟封个神位，玉帝一听，看了看姜子牙，姜子牙为难了，张飞封神还好说，排在关公之后，刘备就不同了，因为玉帝说过，除了他，关圣帝君就是二天爷，若把刘备封在关公之下，不成体统，关公也不会愿意，封在关公之上，玉皇大帝往哪里摆？关公也看出了姜子牙的难处，就请求说：“虎牢关建了个关公庙，我一个人住在那里怪冷清的，不如就让我们三个兄弟都住在那里吧。”于是从此以后，关公庙就塑了刘、关、张三个神像，关公庙亦成了三义庙。
