该乡属我县红色旅游核心区，历史厚重、文化悠久，境内张澜故居景区建设现已接近尾声，目前正着手申报国家AAAA级风景区，全乡风光秀丽，是休闲旅游、度假观光的好去处。
为适应经济发展和场镇建设的需要，结合其特殊的地理位置，经县人民政府研究，拟撤销莲池乡、设立莲池镇，以现在莲池乡所辖行政区域界线不变，撤乡建镇所需经费由该乡财政自行解决。
莲池乡场镇功能齐全。场镇有街道7条，已全部硬化、绿化、亮化，境内有学校、供销社、医院、信用社、邮政局、畜牧站、移动公司、联通公司、电管所、自来水厂、爱众天然气公司等31个驻地单位，场镇服务设施功能齐备。有采用厌氧发酵+生态湿地技术，日处理污水能力500吨的处理站1处。全乡有出境水泥路6条，村道水泥路12条，交通方便快捷，通讯、广播、闭路电视等覆盖率均达100%。
莲池乡经济发展迅速。近年来，该乡围绕县委、县政府提出的“整合旅游资源、发展现代红色旅游”战略目标，立足资源优势，不断发展特色产业，农业产业化、规模化进程进一步加快，经济实力显著加强。
