and our country. Consequently, it makes greater effort in pushing and turning
our economic pattern from traditional industrial economy into knowledge
economy. This research is based on the viewpoint of knowledge economy,
and discusses the industrial knowledge management activities and the extent of
our country‘s traditional industries and the small and medium enterprises.
Additionally, the research attempts to analyze and compare elementarily the
difference between some traditional manufacturing industries— textile, bicycle,
shoes and tea industries, which include most small and medium enterprises.
Finally, we take the marble industry which is almost at a standstill as the target
case, and tries to study it through interviews and questionnaires its’ industrial
knowledge management situation and compare it with other traditional
industries’. It is intended that the result of this research will provide a frame
of reference for the marble industry’s transmuting into knowledge economy
tomorrow.
After analyzing and comparing, the research reaches several conclusions
as follow:
1. The sources of industrial knowledge are few, and the pace of the
accumulation of industrial knowledge is relatively slow.
2. The creation of industrial knowledge is also scanty, due to a lacking in
R&D investment; this in turn causes difficulty in industry upgrade.
3. The spread of industrial knowledge is narrow in scope, and most of it
emphasizes the improvement of production techniques.
ii4. The interchange and communication opportunities of industrial knowledge
are limited, and individual firms have to struggle on their own.
Thus, the research has made several suggestions for Taiwan Marble
Association and Stone Industry Development
