Preface
Simon Dik was the best teacher one could wish for. I am extremely
grateful to him for teaching me various aspects of linguistics: not only
the craft itself, such as theoretical linguistics and typology, but also a
general attitude towards and appreciation of language and languages.
And his students are not only taught linguistics; they get an excellent
teacher’s training course in the process. I am also grateful to him for
supervising the research project that led to this book. He has been a
constant source of inspiration and encouragement. I am only too sorry
that he did not live to see this book finished.
