Abstract
Microgravity shear cell project is to verify and prove the safety and reliability of the test apparatus which is
going to be onboard the NASA’s microgravity test aircraft. At the same time, the results from the analysis
should be used to improve the existing design. Most of the analysis was done by Finite Element Analysis
technique with modeling a virtual model with existing blue prints. All ponents were
examined and improved in order to satisfy NASA’s requirement before getting on the airplane.
Introduction
This project is to analyze and improve the design of the first generation microgravity shear cell in order to
make second generation apparatus which is going to be onboard the NASA’s KC-135 microgravity test
aircraft. Since bustion process must be observed, there are going to be several glass windows
installed on the top plate and in order to install some ponents inside the shear cell, the structural
complexity is inevitable. Furthermore mechanical and structural properties ponents are coupled to
each other, it is not easy to understand the whole system by doing simple analysis. Several assumpti
