Obituary: Jack Phillips
Mechanical engineer, wine lover, academic, kinematician and entertainer.
One of IFToMM’s most lovable characters died on January 11, 2009, peacefully in Sydney, Australia. He is survived
by his partner of 33 years, Elayne Russell, and daughters Catherine and Odette.
Jack Raymond Phillips was born in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, on July 18, 1923. He studied mechanical engineering at
the University of Melbourne and served as an engineering lieutenant in the Australian army. He designed packaging ma-
chines and then worked for ICI in Britain. pleting his . in Melbourne on the mechanisms of trailed disc ploughs,
he joined The University of Western Australia in 1958. After 5 years he moved to Sydney University where he stayed until his
retirement 25 years later.
I studied mechanical engineering in Perth, enmeshed in plexities of the machines he left behind. But it was not
until 1981 that I met him for the first time.
He spoke at the ANZAAS congress on plexities of spatial mechanism kinematics. In a meeting of dark suits, he
wore a beige jacket, white shirt and trousers. In his soft voice, he quietly explained how nature had created the most intri-
