After 18 years, Dr. te was released from the Bastille. His wife was dead and his daughter Lucie grew up into a beautiful young lady. Under the care of Lucie, te was ing back to life but it happened that Lucie ’ s husband Charles Darnay was the son of the very aristocrat, the Marquis of Evremond. Though it was hard for te to accept the fact, he bore it when he realized that Darnay was a nice young man of a noble character. During the French Revolution, the Bastille was stormed and a lot of aristocrats were imprisoned or killed. Charles Darnay was accused and sentenced to death by the revolutionaries for what his evil father had done. ? Dr. te ’ s old servant Defarge and his wife Madame Defarge were radical revolutionaries At the critical moment it was Sidney Carton, an admirer of Lucie, came to the rescue. He looked quite like Darnay in appearance and in order to save Daenay ’ s life, he was willing to sacrifice himself. At the end of the novel, Darnay, together with Dr. te and Lucie escaped from Paris to London while Carton went to the guillotine instead of Darnay. Sidney Carton is almost the only case in which Dickens has drawn a hero on the true heroic scale, and his famous
