三、省略与补充
翻译时两种语言表达方式的转换,不是逐字逐句的死译。因此,在译文的表达过程中,必然包括对原文中某些词省略不译,也可能增补原文中所没有的词。
1)Copper is extremely high-Ductility but cast-iron is not.
铜的韧性极高,而铸铁韧性极低。
2)Manganese is a hard,brittle greywhite metal.
锰是一种灰白的、又硬、又脆的金属。
3)Automatically lathes perform basically similar functions but appear in a variety of forms.
各种自动机床的作用基本相同,但形式不同。
4)The use of silver as a conductor is very limited because of its cost.
由于成本高,用银作导体非常有限。
四、被动语句的广泛使用
被动语态的广泛采用是科技英语的又一显著特点。科技英语侧重于叙事推理,强调客观准确,尽量避免因使用第一、第二人称而造成主观判断的印象,这是被动语态使用的重要原因。在汉译时,译文应采用灵活多样的语态,不能过分拘泥于原文的被动结构,要根据汉语****惯,适当地加入某些字、词,以顺畅地表达意愿。
1)As long as the brain is given plenty of exercises it keeps its power.
只要人脑子得到充分利用,它就会保持其机能。
2)Praise is particularly appreciated by those doing routine jobs.
那些从事例行工作的人们特别懂得赞扬的意义。
3)Attention must be paid to the working temperature of the machine.
应当注意机器的工作温
