波导们为自己的衰落给出过许多解释，其中较为流行的有外国品牌的挤压和山寨机的崛起。而徐立华的总结则更为精炼：“价格太臭”。
实际上，波导、夏新等多家手机公司的高管曾经在不同场合声称“洋品牌是中国手机制造商的学生”。如果是在2004年，这种言论会被解读为傲慢，因为彼时国产手机市场占有率可以达到60%；但是到了2006年再说这话，就只能是充满了“酸味”——洋品牌们已经入侵了低端手机市场并进行渠道下沉——学生不但学会了老师的招数，还反过来打败了老师。
但是在一些市场观察者看来，这却并非故事的全部。分析机构战国策首席分析师杨群跟这个行业打了多年的交道，在他看来，老品牌的集体衰落以及这次科健的破产重组，更大程度上是市场选择的结果，直白点说：“一点也不可惜。”
“科健和其他许多老牌手机厂商，可以说是手机牌照制度的受益者。一开始并不是每个厂家想生产手机就能够生产，而是必须通过信息产业部的核准，拿到手机牌照。

杨群告诉新金融记者，在早期，放出的手机牌照数量相当稀少，在1999年时全国也只有9个，而那时的国内手机市场才起步不久。这就像是一棵结满果子的大树只允许9个人去摘，只会让摘果子的人恨自己没多长出几只手来。
牌照的许可制度保障了早期的辉煌。杨群回忆称，当时手机市场完全由卖方主导：“2003年我去一家手机公司，他们老总拍着我的肩膀说：‘你看兄弟，我连8月份的货都卖掉了’——当时我记得是3月份。”
虽然存在外国品牌的竞争，但是由于市场总量庞大，使得当时的国内手机多少有寡头垄断的意思。“当时，一台手机的利润甚至能够高到2000元，但现在怎么个状况？一部手机的出厂价才100块。”
杨群的话得到了徐立华的确认。徐立华告诉新金融记者，目前波导2G手机的出厂价格就只有每台一百多元的水准，
