In 1967, Taxol was discovered by Dr. Monroe E. Wall and Dr. Mansukh C. Wani at Research Triangle Institute (RTI) of North Carolina, USA.
Later ,they isolated the compound from the Pacific yew tree, and noted its antitumor activity in a broad range of solid tumors.
In 1970, the two RTI scientists determined the structure of taxol through X-ray crystallization diffraction analysis .

In 1979, Susan Horwitz of Albert Einstein Medical College reported that Taxol has a unique mechanism of action .

In 1989, Johns Hopkins University reported the striking clinical results with advanced ovarian cancer in The Annals of Internal Medicine.
In the same year, NCI determined to commercialize the drug.
In 1991 Dr. Samuel Broder, then director of NCI, hailed Taxol as the most important new cancer drug in the next 15 years.
In December 1992 the FDA approved Taxol for refractory ovarian cancer. Later, it was approved for breast cancer.
