Around the year 1000, 500 years earlier than Columbus, a party of Icelandic Vikings under Leif Ericson sailed to the North America and landed at a place they called Vinland.

The Europeans were initially drawn to the New World in search of wealth. Each European sovereign claimed as much territory as possible in the New World by establishing settlements of Europeans. This requirement-fueled the drive for the establishment of colonies.

The first essful English colony in the Americas was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607;

In New England, the northeastern region of what is now the United States; several settlements were established by English Puritans.

In 1621, the puritans gathered in a large crop and the settlers fixed a date to celebrate their harvest in order to express their thanks to God. This is the beginning of the holiday called Thanksgiving.
