A march of glory 
Seventy years ago, in October 1936, the main forces (主力) of the Red Army met in Shaanxi after hard treks (艰苦跋涉) from different parts of China. The meeting gave the Red Army time and strength to win the war (战争) against Kuomintang and the Japanese army. Some say the march was one of the most important events in the past 1,000 years.
1. What is the Long March?
Four groups of the Red Army took part in the trek, each starting at different times and following different routes (路线). The Central Red Army left its base (根据地) in Jiangxi in October 1934. They arrived in Shaanxi one year later. In 1936, all four groups met in Shaanxi.
2. Why did the Red Army make the Long March?

In 1934, the Red Army lost in fighting after Kuomintang’s fifth attack. The enemies put the Red Army under siege (包围). The Red Army had to break the siege lines and move to safer areas to continue the fight against Kuomintang and the Japanese.

The soldiers didn’t have enough food to eat or enough clothes to keep out the cold. They often went hungry for days. At the same time they had to fight with the enemies.
Swamps (沼泽) and the snowy mountains made the trek even more difficult. Because they were so tired, many soldiers fell asleep and never woke up.
Many of the soldiers died fighting. Sometimes the Red Army had to fight against enemies that were several dozen times more in number than themselves. In the fight in Xiangjiang Battle in Guangxi alone, more than 50,000 Red Army soldiers were killed.
4. Why was the Long Ma
