Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing
Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma are apples and oranges. Lean Manufacturing is a system
passing production, quality, human resources, maintenance, engineering and other
aspects of support that grew out of the automobile industry. Six Sigma, by contrast, is an
approach to quality improvement--focused on process capability--that came out of the electronics
industry. In quality management, the approaches plementary. Once Six Sigma has been
used to establish process capability, the Lean Manufacturing tools of one-piece flow with go/no-
go gages, essive inspections, and mistake-proofing kick in to address discrete-event
problems and human error, and take quality performance to the next level. The Black Belt system
is a unique approach based on a corps of internal consultants used to implement Six Sigma, and
attempts have been made in several panies to transplant it to Lean Manufacturing, with
varying degrees of ess. Where Six Sigma is primarily technical in content, Lean
Manufacturing affects both technology and management, and the transferability of an
